Post-OPEC Analysis: “Happy Days” or “Curb Your Enthusiasm”?

By most accounts, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) successfully concluded its November 30 meeting by agreeing to extend the production cuts an additional nine months, to run through the end of 2018, and seeking to cap output from Nigeria and Libya, two members specifically excluded from the earlier pact. At the same time, the group announced that it will continue to monitor ongoing changes in global markets and would review the agreement at its next scheduled meeting in June.

Qatar Crisis: Turmoil in the GCC

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain, along with Egypt, broke diplomatic relations with Qatar on June 5 and simultaneously announced a trade embargo. The trade restrictions include closing airspace to Qatari planes and banning Qatari seaborne vessels. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from Qatar, which represent 30 percent of global LNG trade, as well as smaller amounts of crude oil and LNG by-products are affected.

Syria, OPEC, and Oil Prices

Bullish sentiment pushed prices higher this February. OPEC’s apparent cohesion and drive to rebalance markets, in no small part, fueled that rise, despite significant concerns over still growing stocks, resilient U.S. production, rising rig counts, and fears about tepid demand. Last month, concern over what was seen as overly bullish investor sentiment encouraged an unwinding of record long positions in the market, which subsequently led to a repositioning and price retrenchment.
